|
Kelowna is the largest city in the Okanagan Valley and the third largest city in British Columbia encompassing 101.2 square miles. It offers everything a large metropolis holds including fine dining, unique shops, theatres, a museum, symphony orchestra, art galleries and a vibrant cultural life and then it takes this one step further with orchards, vineyards, wineries, golf courses and beaches within 10 minutes of its centre. The Okanagan College offers university and transfer programs as well as a wide range of adult education and trade courses. In addition, the University of British Columbia has opened up an Okanagan campus in Kelowna, allowing students to obtain university degrees without leaving the valley.
Kelowna is situated on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake mid-way between Penticton in the south and Vernon in the north. There are many beaches and coves on the 90 mile long lake offering great swimming, picnicking, fishing and boating. The nearby mountains provide skiers, bikers and hikers a beautiful vista and the three major ski hills are within a one hour drive from downtown Kelowna. The summers are long and hot with an average daytime high of 27.4c in July and August. Winters are temperate with an average daytime high of -0.30c in December and January. There are over 2000 hours of sunshine annually and just over 11 inches of rain.
Kelowna is a retirement Mecca and tourist destination with a flourishing tree fruit industry, growing light industrial sector competing on a world scale, manufacturing centre and a growing high tech sector, which includes aerospace development and service. It is home to 100,000 people and its hospital is the largest and most comprehensive in the southern BC area with a full treatment cancer clinic.
Kelowna continues to grow as a city and as a destination. Young families are choosing to raise their children in a relatively clean and safe environment where they can capture a lifestyle second to none and retired people like the secure neighbourhoods and wealth of services. Schools, churches, sports facilities, parks and recreation are just a few of the amenities making Kelowna one of the most desired locations in which to live.
